Melbourne Airport has welcomed the Victorian Government’s budget commitment to fund an airport rail link and oversee widening of the Tullamarine Freeway to support Victoria’s growth.
Melbourne Airport CEO, Mr Chris Woodruff, said that the projects were critical to meeting future demand for access to Victoria’s aviation gateway Robe De Mariée
“As we look to double our passenger numbers to around 60 million over the next 20 years, a rail link and widening the Tullamarine Freeway are critical to improving access to our great state for both visitors and Victorians,” said Mr Woodruff.
“To be able to meet the future demands of our customers and passengers, we’ve embarked on the largest transformation of Melbourne Airport since it opened more than 40 years ago. We’re upgrading and enhancing our facilities with improved access an important element of our $10 billion investment program over the next 20 years.”
“We’re pleased that the state government is also supporting Victoria’s growth with important infrastructure investments including an airport rail link.”
“The funding commitments are also a boost for our freight industry and support Victoria’s status as Australia’s freight state. Improved access to Melbourne Airport is a key component of growing our important export markets and achieving the state’s vision of becoming Asia’s food bowl,” said Mr Woodruff.
“The widening of the Tullamarine Freeway to Melrose Drive is set to increase capacity by around 30 per cent and importantly reduce travel time in peak periods from the West Gate Freeway by around 15 minutes.”
“To further reduce travel times, we’re looking forward to a positive result from the discussions between the State and Federal Governments about widening the Tullamarine Freeway from Melrose Drive right through to Melbourne Airport.”
